How to Care for Your Resin Art So It Shines for Years

Resin is strong but it has a few simple needs. Here is our honest guide to cleaning, heat, sunlight and storage so your piece keeps its glow for years.
When your resin piece arrives, it is glossy, clear and full of life. With a little care, it can stay that way for many years. Resin is a strong material, but like anything handmade, it lasts longest when it is treated gently.
Here is everything we tell our customers about looking after their pieces, written simply and honestly.
Understanding Your Resin Piece
Our pieces are made from epoxy resin that has fully cured over 24 to 72 hours. Once cured, it is hard, waterproof and quite durable. It handles everyday use well.
But resin has two weak points: heat and long exposure to strong sunlight. Most care advice comes back to those two things.
Cleaning: Soft and Simple
Cleaning resin is easy. You don't need special products.
- Wipe the surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
- For sticky marks, use a drop of mild dish soap in lukewarm water.
- Dry straight away with a clean, soft cloth to avoid water spots.
What to Avoid When Cleaning
- No dishwashers. The heat and strong detergents can dull the surface and weaken the piece.
- No rough scrubbers, steel wool or abrasive powders. They leave fine scratches that catch dirt and look cloudy.
- No strong chemicals like acetone, thinner or bleach. They can damage the finish.
- No soaking for long periods, especially pieces with dried flowers, wooden parts or metal fittings.
Heat: The Most Important Rule
Resin begins to soften when it gets too hot. As a general guide, keep your piece away from temperatures above about 50°C.
This means:
- Don't place pots or pans straight from the stove onto resin trays or platters.
- Keep pieces away from stoves, ovens, heaters and irons.
- Don't leave resin items inside a parked car in summer, where temperatures climb very quickly.
A Note on Coasters
Our Umar coasters are made to be used, and a cup of chai or coffee is fine. But there are limits. A mug of hot tea that you have poured and are drinking is usually okay. A boiling-hot pot or a cup straight from the microwave left for a long time is not.
If you love very hot drinks, let the cup cool for a minute before placing it down. Over time, repeated high heat can leave faint rings or soft marks.
Think of resin like a fine piece of glassware. Strong enough for daily life, but happiest when it isn't pushed to extremes.
Sunlight and Yellowing
All epoxy resin can slowly turn slightly yellow over time when exposed to UV light. Good quality resin slows this down, but no resin is fully immune.
To keep your piece clear and bright for longer:
- Avoid placing it in direct sunlight for long hours, such as on a sunny windowsill.
- Wall clocks and name plates are best hung on walls that don't get strong afternoon sun.
- Lighter colours and clear pieces show yellowing more than deep colours like navy.
This isn't a defect. It is simply how resin ages. Keeping it out of harsh sunlight makes a real difference.
Caring for Jewellery and Small Pieces
Earrings, jhumkas, lockets and chains need a little extra care because they are worn on the body.
- Put jewellery on after perfume, lotion and makeup, not before.
- Remove it before bathing, swimming or washing dishes.
- Store pieces separately in a soft pouch or box so they don't scratch each other.
- Wipe gently after wearing to remove oils.
Keychains live a harder life in bags and pockets. Small scratches are normal over time. Keeping them away from sharp keys where possible will help.
Storing Pieces You Don't Use Every Day
Bridal mehndi thaals, serving platters and gift trays are often used only on special occasions. Between uses:
- Clean and dry them fully.
- Wrap them in a soft cloth or tissue paper.
- Store them flat in a cool, dry place, away from heavy items stacked on top.
Avoid storing resin pieces in hot storerooms or under roofs that get very warm in summer.
Small Scratches and Dull Spots
With daily use, light scratches can appear. For small surface marks, a gentle polish with a soft cloth often helps. Deep scratches are harder to fix at home, and we would rather you didn't try sanding the piece yourself.
If something has happened to your piece and you are worried, send us a message with a photo. We will tell you honestly whether it can be fixed.
A Little Care Goes a Long Way
Resin art doesn't need much. A soft cloth, some common sense about heat, and a spot away from harsh sun is truly most of it. Treat your piece gently, and it will keep catching the light for years.
